Root to rise by Kate Miller
Reduction Linocut
An ancient beech tree; welcoming yet strong, graceful yet imposing. With wide-reaching, criss-crossing roots, the tree connects with the mycorrhizal networks beneath the ground, providing the sustenance needed to support the broad canopy of light and shade overhead. The branches too, reach far and wide. Created as part of my 'Route to Remember project'.
Reduction linocuts, like this one, are created by gradually cutting the design into a lino printing plate in layers, with each colour printed carefully on top of the previous one as you cut more away. It requires good registration and the ability to think through the colours and shapes backwards!
